Match Report [Based on John Lonsdale’s longer report from a Manchester perspective] Shropshire won the early games to overcome their default deficit. With the last four boards in play, Shropshire were in the lead by a point. Manchester’s Mark McNulty made it only three to go when he agreed a draw. Nathan Butterworth levelled the match for Manchester converting his extra material into a win. By this time, Manchester were hoping to bag the match because David Connolly was the exchange up with rooks on the seventh. Active counterplay by Richard Thompson forced the Manchester player to return the material. Soon after Connolly also had to jettison a knight for two advanced passed pawns leaving an ending of rook and two pawns against rook, bishop and pawn. Fortunately for Manchester, Thompson had the wrong bishop for queening his h-pawn and any exchange of rooks was dead drawn so to Shropshire’s delight Connolly and Thompson agreed a draw. This gave Shropshire an unexpected match point.
