Notts took an early 3½-½ lead and maintained that gap after a further five finishes at 6-3. Thereafter it was all downhill for the home side losing four games in a row. With two boards left, the scores were tied at 7-7. It was clear that Notts were about to lose on board 4, so the Lincolnshire captain offered a draw on board 2, although standing rather better. With the draw accepted, the final board soon ended in an away victory to give Lincolnshire a win by the smallest possible margin. The match was notable for the large number of decisive games: 13 out of the 16 ending in wins withthree draws only.
