Staffs juniors 5th in Division 2 Blitz online team battle

5 Jul 2021. Three MCCU area junior teams competed and the highest placed were Staffordshire Juniors in fifth place led by Ezra2164. Worcestershire Squad team were seventh. The event was won by Hampshire Junior Chess Association. Full results.

Over forty Midlands clubs compete in UK Chess Challenge School teams competition

21 Jun 2021. Manchester Grammar School were first in the North West competition, Laxton Junior School first in the East Midlands, and The Blue Coat School, Birmingham first in the West Midlands.

Covid restrictions lifted

17 May 2021. All restrctions in England on indoor events were lifted.

Warwickshire win ECF Under-18 Online County Championship

21 Nov 2020. Warwickshire won with 12 points followed by Kent on 10. Leicestershire were 8th on 4 points, Staffordshire 9th with 4, Worcestershire 10th on 3, and Greater Manchester on 3 points. The competition used a time control of 10 min + 5 sec and Midland Arbiters were Alex Holowczak (Worcs) and Matthew Carr (Staffs). See full results.

Covid-19 stopped play

26 Mar 2020. A virus epidemic caused the Government to prohibit all indoor events for several months and over-the-board chess had to be replaced by online events both in the UK and in many countries of the world.

Three Cs players scoop prizes at Chester

23 Feb 2020. Players from the Oldham club won seven prizes at the two-day Northern Junior Championships held at Chester: Aisha Benhamid (1st Under-18 Girls); Mohammed Benhamid (1st= Under-14 Boys); Ethan Gardiner (1st Under-12 Boys); Rebecca Correa (3rd Under-12 Girls); Edward Correa (2nd= Under 10 Boys); Alannah Ashton (1st Under-9 Girls); Savannah Ashton (1st Under-7 Girls). Other Midlands winners were: Ben Whitehead (2nd Under-16 Boys, Gtr Manchester Juniors); Dylan Whitney (3rd Under-12 Boys, Newcastle-u-Lyme); Dylan Cooper (3rd Under-12 Boys, Staffordshire); Anirudh Nedungadi (2nd Under-8 Boys, Manchester). Over ninety boys and girls entered.

Bloxwich Junior club 10 years old!

4 Feb 2020. Bloxwich juniors joined Walsall’s mayor and mayoress Paul and Chris Bott in the Mayor’s Parlour to celebrate the tenth birthday of Boxwich Junior Chess Academy. The club was founded by Ray and Eunice Dolan. Starting with only 6 players, the club now has 30 members. The club has provided 5 players for English squads in recent years. The club has taught new players and older members have used their skills as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award skill-set. Special guest was former English team captain David Anderton OBE.

Imogen Dicen wins England Girls' Championship

21 Oct 2019. Imogen from Coventry Chess Academy was placed first on 4½ points. Imogen drew the final round game with second placed Arora Tashika to secure the title. See full results at chess-results.com. The event was held at in the orangery of Blenheim Palace. Sister Elis Dicen won the English Girls' under-9 Minor tournament.

UK Schools Daventry Terafinal Midland successes

22 Sep 2019. Nearly 200 players took part. Jonah Willow (W Nottingham) was 2nd and Jacob Boswell (Cheddleton, Staffs was third in the under-18 tournament. Samia Z Skeik (Kettering, Northants) was top girl in the under-14s and Edison Xu (Newport Shrops) was 3rd in the under 12s. Players form southern and home counties dominated the prize lists for the younger age groups.
