Notts trailed Devon by 7½ - 6½ and required one and half points to again win on tiebreak. The Devon captain Brian Hewson defended stoutly in a rook and pawn ending and eventually a draw had to be conceded. Notts then required a win on the remaining board but with less than a couple of minutes left on both clocks, the Notts player, Tim Lane, agreed a draw when it was clear there was no prospect of forcing a win with major pieces still left on the board.
