Match report from Giles Stanton. The match was a close run affair. One of Worcester's players had to withdraw late because of a family emergency. In the early stages boards 16 and 5 agreed early draws. Kyle Reed (Worcs) played with assurance capitalising on his opponent's mistakes to gain Worcs' first win. Worcester players Doug Bott and Francis O'Gorman regained their form to score wins. Doug with well marshalled troops overwhelmed his opponent's castled king. Francis O'Gorman (Worcs) maintained an Iron grip on the position while his opponent fell behind on the clock eventually loosing on time. The next games to finish were three draws leaving the match score at 2½ to 5½ in Worcestershire's favour. Shropshire replied with three sucessive wins to tie the scores. In the remaining games, however, the advantage was with Worcestershire. Both of Worcester's Friar brothers sacrificed a pawn in the opening and used their superior development to score. In Joseph's case winning a piece and James's case his centralised queen and knight threatening mate on the move: too much for his opponent to cope with. Realising the advantage lay with Worcestershire, Rob Bricknell offered a draw, which was accepted. When John Gittus (Worcesterscire) accepted his opponent's offer of a draw, Worcestershire were over the winning line. The board 15 game was hard-fought. Arnold had what looked like a winning attack but Derrick came in with counter threats and both sides were threatening to queen a pawn. With the threats nullified, a draw was agreed.
