Match report from Simon Smith via Alex Holowczak. Staffordshire under David Anderton's captaincy put out, as expected, a very strong team. The match was played in a good spirit with many familiar faces, both teams composed largely of Birmingham league players. Warks' sole winner was Tony Hynes. Tony was black and skilfully defended an exchange Ruy Lopez. Alan Lloyd another Warwickshire stalwart played well to get a draw in an interesting rook, bishop, and pawns versus rook knight and pawns endgame that went to nearly the end of a tough five-hour match. Playing board 1, Richard Weaving (Warks) got a draw against IM Lawrence Cooper (Staffs). Warwickshire's Simon Smith let Nick Walker off the hook by playing a flashy combination that only led to a level position instead of turning the screw to get an overwhelming one. Mike Doran and Jon Turner debuting for Warwickshire first team both claimed draws against much higher graded players. Players thanked Richard and Robert Reynolds of Olton Chess Club who let us use their venue and gave a tremendous amount of logistical support. Thanks also to David Brelsforth who provided refreshments to players in both the u140 and the open matches that were played at Olton.
