Published 2011 Under-100 Team Championship Quarter Final: Essex - NottinghamshirePlayed on 20 May 2006 at players on odd-numbered boards had white. It was not reported which players had white.
A weakened Notts team took on a full strength Essex team. Andrew Garside was the first Notts player to score, but lower boards struggled. Ken Heath did well with a steady game to gain a crucial half. Clifford Potter also defied the odds having been a piece down. When only two boards were in play, Notts needed one further point and then disaster struck. The mobile of one of the Notts players sounded and that meat an automatic loss. This left Jonathen Day to resue the match. He did so in superb fashion, winning a rook and pawn ending to tie the scores and make Notts winner on board-count. (Based on report by Michael Barnes from The Middlegame Results Supplement 22) |
